Insurance

Protecting the income everything else depends on

Most plans are built on the assumption that you keep earning. Disability and critical illness coverage is what keeps that assumption true through an illness or injury.

Two different jobs

Income replacement and lump-sum coverage

Disability insurance

A monthly benefit that replaces a portion of your income while you cannot work. The definition of disability, the waiting period and the benefit period matter far more than the premium.

  • Own-occupation definitions
  • Waiting and benefit periods
  • Business overhead expense
  • Cost-of-living riders

Critical illness insurance

A tax-free lump sum on diagnosis of a covered condition. It funds the choices a diagnosis forces — treatment, time away, a spouse's leave, a change of plan.

  • Covered condition lists
  • Survival periods
  • Return-of-premium options
  • Child coverage

Who this matters most for

Where the gap is usually largest

Incorporated professionals

  • No employer plan
  • High income to replace
  • Overhead continues
  • Own-occupation definition matters

Business owners

  • Revenue tied to your presence
  • Loan covenants and guarantees
  • Key person exposure
  • Partner agreements

Employees

  • Group LTD caps and taxation
  • Definition changes after 24 months
  • Coverage ends with employment
  • Top-up individual coverage

The details that decide whether a claim pays

Two policies with the same monthly benefit can behave completely differently at claim time. The definition of disability decides whether you are covered for your own occupation or any occupation you could reasonably perform. The benefit period decides whether payments run for two years or to age 65.

We read those provisions with you before you apply, compare the offers across the carriers we represent, and keep the contract on file so it is reviewed as your income and obligations change.

We will look at what you have through work, what it actually covers and what is left exposed.
